Tax rules

Current GST rules on gold in India

Understanding the dual GST structure on gold purchases.

Under the GST regime in India, gold attracts a 3% GST on the base value of gold. Additionally, making charges on gold jewellery attract 5% GST. This means when you buy gold jewellery, you pay two separate GST components — one on the gold value and another on the making charges.

Impact

How GST affects gold prices

Comparing pre-GST and post-GST tax structure on gold.

Before GST, gold attracted 1% excise duty and 1.2% VAT (varying by state), totalling approximately 2.2%. With the introduction of GST, the tax rate became a uniform 3% across India. While this slightly increased the tax burden, it simplified the tax structure and eliminated inter-state tax differences. The 5% GST on making charges replaced the earlier service tax.
